I have been at Akers for 28 years. My first 12 years I taught 7th and 8th grade Algebra. For the past 16 years I have taught Physical Education.
Physical Education classes: 6th - 8th Grade
All co-ed physical education classes begin with a warm-up run and stretching routine. Next, students participate in various drills that will allow students to be successful in the current activity. Modified games will be played as a lead-up to the actual activity. There will be a test at the end of most activities. I try to give my students a wide variety of activities. Good sportsmanship, safety, and positive attitude are stressed on a daily bases.
Akers P.E. classes provide a safe environment where all students, no matter their athletic ability, feel free to participate without embarrassment.
My goal is for all students to be successful and to have fun.
Student’s grades are based on a weighting system. The percentage of each section is listed below. Grades are not based on athletic ability.
The percentages below apply to each activity. An activity will run about 2 to 3 weeks.
- Participation (Graded weekly): 60%. I will be looking at the quality of their effort.
- Showing good sportsmanship (Graded every 3 weeks): 15%. Sportsmanship and character will be frequently discussed.
- Having good safety practices (Graded every 3 weeks): 10%. Every activity will have rules in place to ensure the safest possible environment. This includes wearing proper clothing.
- Test: 15%.There will be a test at the end of most activities. A practice test will be available in their Pe Showbie the day we start the activity.
Grade Scale:
97% - 100% = A+
96% - 93% = A
92% - 90% = A-
89% - 87% = B+
86% - 83% = B
82% - 80% = B-
79% - 77% = C+
76% - 73% = C
72% - 70% = C-
69% - 67% = D+
66% - 63% = D
62% - 60% = D-
Below 60% = F
- 7th graders will be taking the California Physical Fitness Test. There will be 5 tests: the mile run; push-ups; sit and reach; crunches; and trunk lift. Testing will start in March. I will send a report home after we complete the testing at the end of April. California has put this on hold.
- Students should practice push-ups and crunches at home so they can be prepared
- I strongly suggest students stay active and eat healthy while they are at home.
- Students will not be required to perform any make-up work due to absences.
- Students that are unable to perform physical activity due to injury or illness (Doctor or parent note) will help officiate during PE class.
- Students that do not wear proper shoes or clothing will complete a written assignment to earn their participation grade for that day. Topics will include sports, health, and physical activities. The best grade they can receive for the day is a C if they do an outstanding job on the assignment.
