ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Hi my name is Kristi Wilcox and I am excited to be teaching second grade at Akers Elementary. I have been teaching in this district for 22 years. I earned my BA degree and teaching credential from Fresno State University.
I have been married to Lane Wilcox for 29 years. We have 2 children, Gage and Courtney. Gage attends College of the Sequoias and Courtney is a Kindergarten teacher in Lemoore.
I believe that a classroom must be structured in order for learning to take place. Students need to practice self-control and self-discipline. Students will have consequences for not following the rules. Students with positive behavior will be rewarded. I use the clip chart system to reinforce behavior. This allows the student to clip up or down depending on the choice they make.
The curriculum in my class is driven by the Common Core State Standards. Our year is divided into integrated units that are based on these standards.
The morning is mainly devoted to Math and Language Arts. McMillian/McGraw Hill is our district adopted program for both of these. The focus in the afternoon is Science and Social Studies. Writing is integrated into all the subjects. We have P.E. two times a week with Mr. Avery. Also, every Monday we have a Fitness Run where the students have an opportunity to earn charms. The students also have Art every other week with Mr. Fraley.
TECHNOLOGY: Our district is fortunate enough to have a one to one ratio with
i pads for the students. The students are allowed to utilize many of the apps which reinforce material taught in the classroom. They also work on many different projects throughout the year.
Students are given homework on a daily basis. Homework is designed so that the students practice any language or math skills which were taught in class. It also teaches the students responsibility to get them prepared for the future.
