Mrs. Tubbs has been teaching since 1983. She received her degree and teaching credential at Point Loma Nazarene College in San Diego.
The curriculum in Mrs. Tubbs’ class is driven by the California Common Core Standards. She uses a wide variety of materials to create lessons that link skills, understanding, and activities.
The morning is mainly devoted to Language Arts. Macmillan/McGraw Hill California “Treasures” and SRA Reading Mastery are the district- adopted programs. Students receive daily instruction in reading comprehension strategies as well as fluency, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. We have Excel Reading from 8:15 to 9:15. This provides students the opportunity to have reading instruction at their level.
In math, the McGraw-Hill Mathematics is the core program used in first grade. It is supplemented with activities and games.
Students are given homework on a weekly basis. Homework is designed so that the students read nightly and practice any language or math skills that are taught in class. Parents are encouragd to check their child's homework packet and make any necessary corrections. Homework is given on Monday and due on Friday. Students are expected to read 10 minutes nightly.
First grade students also have specialty classes in art and P:E.
