Akers Elementary

Mrs. Bono - Kindergarten

Welcome to kindergarten at Akers Elementary! My name is Denise Bono and I am so excited to have the opportunity to “walk” with your child on the beginning of their educational journey. I have been working for our wonderful district for 12 years and this is my fifth year teaching. I was an Instructional Aide, instructing students to read with our Reading Mastery Program, working with Special Education and also responsible for testing and supporting our ESL students. I worked in kindergarten for several years and was also responsible for students in our after school programs. I earned my BA degree at Chapman University and my teaching credential at Fresno State.

I have been married for over 24 years and have 3 amazing sons, one daughter-in-law and three beautiful grandchildren. I enjoy reading, cooking and spending time with my family. I grew up in Lemoore and am very thankful for our small and lovely town.

Our kindergarten program is an all day program and we are really enjoying the fact that we can go “deeper’ into our units because we have more time and don’t feel rushed. We are fortunate to have aides who assist us with our Reading Mastery Program. Our kindergartners learn to decode words through this strong phonics program and will leave kindergarten as readers. Several aides come in for 1 hour and this allows us to  to level our reading groups and meet the specific needs of each student. We supplement our Reading Mastery program with “Wonders”, which adds level appropriate stories, vocabulary, story retell and other components that we use to enrich our curriculum. We use a lot of hands-on learning for our math and students will learn a variety of ways to  show and tell what they know about shapes and numbers. Ipads are also a part of our routine and students create, share and use technology to enhance our learning. This is an exciting time in education and we are embracing the changes as we continue to guide our students to reach their potential.

I have several systems in place to help manage the classroom. I use the clip system, table points, daily stickers, and a reward chart that coordinates with the clip system. Students receive a stamp on their hand if they are on green/blue or the Star Chart. Students will bring home a daily folder that allows open communication. Please feel free to email me, and also come talk to me about any questions or concerns you may have before or after school. You and your student are very important to me and I look forward to our journey together!
