Mrs. Rice - Kindergarten

Welcome to kindergarten! My name is Melissa Rice and I have the chance to welcome your child to the beginning of their educational career in Kindergarten. I teach in a shared classroom with Mrs. Holdbrooks. We split the full day; myself teaching from 11:00-3:00 and Mrs. Holdbrooks from 8:00-12:00. With two teachers in the room your children have twice the fun!

Let me tell you a little about myself- In 2006 I earned my BA in Graphic Design from Cal State Long Beach. Half way through my education I realized my love for children was undying and my desire to work with them was still a passion of mine. At that point I overlapped my degree with my teaching credential. Soon after I graduated, I taught kindergarten for two years in Fallbrook, CA until I relocated to the Central Valley with my family of 5. We have been here for 8 years and have been truly blessed.

Our kindergarten program is a full day program. We start at 8:00 and dismiss at 2:10. In our district we are fortunate to have aids who assist us with our Reading Mastery Program for an hour of small group reading during each day.  We supplement this reading program with "Wonders", a language arts curriculum.  This adds unit based stories, vocabulary, spelling, story retell, and many other components that we pull to enrich our language arts. We follow "My Math" as our math curriculum. It encourages delving deeper into numbers and making math associations in our daily routines. Our district is on the front lines of Common core and technolgy, modeling their components in our classrooms. We are in exciting times as we continue to foster and develop our students to the best of their potential.

We run on a trimester schedule.  After each trimester students will receive a report card, reflecting their accomplishments and standings. We will hold conferences after first trimester and then only as needed for the remaining 2 trimesters.

In our classroom we have several systems integrated into our day to help manage the classroom. This involves clips, table points and daily stickers for demonstrating their best work.  Students receive a daily folder that allows open communication as it is checked daily.  In addition to email, I have an open door policy and would like you to know that you are welcome to come talk to me about any questions or concerns you may have before school hours or after school in person or through email.

I look forward to meeting you and student! We are going to have a great year!
