Hello, my name is Mrs. Holmes and I teach first grade at Akers.  I am a graduate of Fresno State University and attained my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Teaching through Fresno Pacific University. I am proudly celebrating my 12th year of teaching and I look forward to continuing my career in education. This will be my 4th year teaching first grade at Akers. I have a passion for teaching and learning. I chose to be a teacher because there were teachers who made a difference in my life; I hope to do the same for the students who walk through my classroom door. I look forward to making this a successful year, thank you parents for your dedication and support.

During the 2019_2020 school year, I will be taking maternity leave. While I am on maternity leave, Mr. Medrano will be my replacement teacher. He is a highly qualified educator. He was born and raised in the Hanford/Lemoore area, he served 4 years in the Army and was stationed in Germany. He also served some time as an Army Reserve.  He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Fresno Pacific and has been subbing with our district and others for 18 years.  He has experience working with all grade-levels and has covered many long-term positions. His most recent long-term position took place in a first grade classroom on the NAS Lemoore base.  I have worked closely with Mr. Medrano and the first-grade team at Akers to ensure a productive and successful school year. 

Our school district believes in the support and academic achievement for every child. Mr. Medrano supports these beliefs and will practice a variety of teaching strategies to create an engaging learning environment.  I look forward to returning to school and meeting each of the students and families.

Every Monday 8:00am-1:00pm
Tuesday-Friday 8:00am-2:10pm
*Snack and morning recess: 9:00-9:15am
Lunch and afternoon recess: 11:20-12:00pm
*If you would like your child to have a snack please provide a healthy snack for them. They also have the option of purchasing second chance breakfast during this time. (Only if they did not purchase the morning breakfast before 8am)

Flexible Seating
Students will have the opportunity to use various seating choices according to availability. Currently, we have the following choices: yoga ball, camping chair, wobble cushion, stools and lap trays.

School Supplies List/ Class Needs
On the first day of school each student will be provided with a pencil box and basic school supplies: pencils, scissors, glue stick, crayons, etc.
In addition all folders and writing paper will be provided. The only items a parent may consider purchasing for the class are the following:
-Standard, wood #2 pencils (without art)
-Extra glue-sticks (any brand)
-2-3ply Kleenex
-Baby wipes 
-Hand Sanitizer
-Stickers for teacher to use for positive reinforcement.

Behavior Management

A clip up and clip down chart will be used to monitor positive and negative behaviors.*

Creating a successful, learning environment for your child is a team effort, please help support our classroom rules and advise your child as needed at home if there is a concern.  

*At any time if a student has severely broken our classroom rules the student will be issued a ticket (referral) and/or suspended depending on the level of behavior.


  • Eagle Bucks will be given for turning in homework on time and good behavior. Periodically, students will have the opportunity to spend their eagle bucks at a student store. The student store is nicely stocked each year with items such as: sports equipment, school supplies, games and electronics. 
  • Student of the Month and Character Counts Awards: a student is chosen for each category according to their behavior, integrity and quality of work. Each trimester an assembly will be held in the cafeteria and parents will be invited to attend. Each teacher is allowed 3-5 awards per trimester. 
  • Five Eagle Award recipients are chosen for overall growth each trimester.
  • Fun Fridays: students who complete their classwork and homework may participate in  "Fun Friday" activities. These activities will include cooperative learning games, educational iPad activities, etc. Occasionally, I will host themed parties such as "flashlight party", "chalk party", "bubble party", etc. 
  • Smiles and Praise: I like to smile and thank students for their great work and positive behaviors in and out of class. I encourage students to take ownership of their learning experiences, which will assist in building responsibility, positive relationships and confidence.
  • School-wide trimester awards for good behavior: students who do not receive a referral will have the opportunity to participate in trimester awards such as movie day and swim day. 

Each student will be provided with an orange homework folder, inside you will find a spelling list, it is your choice how to practice these words each week. My suggestion would be to give your child a pretest and practice the words they misspelled throughout the week, on Thursday give them a practice test. A spelling test will be given each Friday in class.

Math homework will normally come in three pages: the first two pages are completed in class with the teacher, the third page is the homework page. 

In the black folder, you will find their reading mastery/DISTAR homework. This homework supports our district-wide reading program. Parents will listen to their child read two passages and sign each night. Each passage is given in accordance to their reading level and checked by their reading teacher daily. (This should take 3-6 minutes).

Your child will be assigned homework Monday through Thursday. All homework reinforces the concepts and skills we have learned in class. It also prepares students for upcoming assessments and it develops good study habits. In addition, it allows you as the parent to assess your child's abilities and monitor growth. 

I am aware that special events or circumstances occur. I am flexible in excusing your child from homework assignments or altering their assignments so they feel successful. I ask that you contact me or write a note on their homework page.

As our school transitions into the new phases of Common Core Standards feel free to review the links below for more detailed information. Some of the activities I am promoting in class to prepare students for the new standards include items such as: iPad presentations, online portfolios (Showbie), interactive video conferencing, number talks and cooperative group learning environments. Video conferencing offers our classroom virtual field trips and experiences with outside experts from other cities and states.

Personal Goal

It is my personal goal to ensure all students are taught the standards according to their level of learning, as well as, teach students how to be productive leaders in their community, reflective of their actions and lifelong learners. This year will be fun and productive!
